Not All Insurance Agents Are Working For You

Before you sign anything, understand the critical differences between commission-hungry agents and true professionals — and how the wrong choice can leave your family unprotected when it matters most.

The 5 Types of Agents You'll Encounter

Understanding who is sitting across from you (or calling you) can save your family thousands — and ensure you're actually covered.

Day-One Coverage vs. 2-Year Waiting Period

Simplified Issue — Day-One Full Coverage

You answer a short health questionnaire (no physical exam). If approved, your full death benefit is active from the very first day — whether death is from natural causes or accident.

  • Requires answering basic health questions

  • Full benefit paid from day 1 — natural OR accidental death

  • Available to many people with manageable health conditions

  • Often priced comparably or better than guaranteed issue

  • Carriers: Mutual of Omaha Living Promise, Transamerica FE Immediate Solution, Fidelity Life RAPIDecision, Aetna Level Benefit, Americo Level

Guaranteed Issue — 2-Year Waiting Period

No health questions at all — but there's a major catch. If you die within the first 2 years from natural causes, your beneficiary receives ONLY a return of premiums paid (plus some interest) — NOT the full death benefit.

  • No health questions — but you pay dearly for that guarantee

  • Natural death within 2 years = premium refund only, NOT face amount

  • Accidental death is usually covered from day one (the loophole they advertise)

  • Agents often bury this fact in fine print or never mention it

Graded Benefit — Partial Coverage Buildup

Some policies pay a percentage of the face amount in the early years. Death in year 1 might pay only 30–40%, year 2 pays 70–80%, and full benefit kicks in at year 3+. A step above guaranteed issue, but still not day-one protection.

  • Year 1: Often 25–40% of face amount

  • Year 2: Often 50–75% of face amount

  • Year 3+: 100% full death benefit

  • Better than pure waiting period — still not ideal

  • Used for applicants with serious pre-existing conditions who can't qualify for level

Scams, Manipulation & Sales Tactics Exposed

The insurance industry has some of the most sophisticated manipulation tactics in any sales environment. Know them. Recognize them. Walk away.

  • Before signing anything, ask: "If I die of natural causes in month 6, what exactly does my family receive?" Get the answer in writing.

  • Confirm your agent's license at your state's Department of Insurance website. It takes 60 seconds and could save you from a fraud scheme.

  • An independent broker represents 15–30+ carriers and can shop the market for your specific health profile. Captive agents only sell their employer's products.

  • Any agent who won't let you sleep on a decision is creating false urgency. Take 48 hours. Review the policy document. Ask a trusted family member.

  • Verify the carrier's financial strength at ambest.com. Look for A- or higher. Never buy from a carrier rated B+ or below.

  • Misrepresentation on your application — even if an agent told you to answer a certain way — can result in a claim denial. Read every question yourself.

  • Some carriers advertise by "units." Always ask: "In dollars, how much does my family receive?" not "how many units do I have?"

  • Legitimate agents don't need your Social Security number or bank information until you're ready to submit an application — and only after you've reviewed all terms.

  • Report deceptive insurance agents to your state's Department of Insurance and the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Your report protects other seniors.

  • A Real Deal agent will review your policy annually. If yours never calls after the sale — find a new agent. You deserve ongoing service, not just a signature.
